Archive for February, 2007

Ho-hum, I know it’s been a while since my last post. First off, here’s a preview of the E61i from AAS. Even though the E90 has more features, I’m still partial to the “Blackberry” form factor of the E61. Go go Nokia! Also, here’s an article – with a funny picture – about enemies of the iPhone. As I discussed in one of my first posts, the iPhone lacks a lot of features even if it were released today. Still, I can’t help but wonder if & when Apple will sue Meizu for their, uuuh, iClone.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been using Vista RC1 for a while now. Although Vista is not perfect, it has served me well; it helps that it’s a free beta copy so I guess that’s why I’m not complaining. Still, based on these articles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, whew!), Vista seems to have its fair share of detractors. Their common recommendation is to stick to XP or switch to Mac. When my Vista RC1 expires in June, I still haven’t decided what I’ll do. To be honest, I don’t want to switch back to XP since I would miss the cool little things in Vista. Mac? Not an option, since I’d rather spend $199 for Vista Business Upgrade then junk my laptop and buy a new one for $1.5K. Besides, how the hell will I use PLDT Weroam on a Macbook? Ubuntu is very tempting, but I guess I’ll cross the bridge when I get there..

Phones Galore + Cool Collaborations

Here’s a short update for the week. First, it seems that a lot of cool phones are being announced this week. Check this out for the top 10 phones from 3GSM as per Gizmodo. Among the phones featured, the Nokia 6110 Navigator is the one that yanks my chain, though the Nokia N77 and Samsung SGH-F520 also pique my interest. Still, as a very happy E61 user, the new E-series phones rock my world the most. This article from E-Series nicely summarizes the cool features of the E90, E61i & E65. Of the three new phones, I’m partial to the E61i (no surprise), though the changes that Nokia implemented aren’t enough to entice me to upgrade.

Still, the E90 is the undisputed top-of-the-line E-series phone, since it has a similar feature set to the N95. Given a choice, I might go with the E90 since it has a QWERTY keyboard, though based on experiences with my dad’s 9500, I prefer the E61’s keyboard. This nice article on the E90 from AAS should be enough to convince fans that Nokia made the right decision to drop S80 in favor of S60. So, I guess my new dream smartphone is the Nokia E90. Yikes! 😯

Whoa, it’s been a while since my last full entry. I’ve been glued to my laptop for the past week for the sake of a new business venture. My partners & I are developing a LAMP-based accounting system, so I’ve begun to get my hands dirty with Linux. For the not-so-tech adoks out there, LAMP generally stands for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. Since my sister-in-law is a mini-expert on PHP & MySQL, I’ve decided to focus on Linux & Apache. So, my goal is to become a full-fledged Linux-Apache systems administrator in a year’s time. The good thing is that, instead of being totally stressed out, I’m really REALLY excited.

The first thing that I had to decide was the Linux distribution of choice for my self-study. I mentioned in a previous post that I’ve tried different Linux distributions before. My former distribution of choice was Fedora, the community version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux or RHEL. I used to work for the local Red Hat partner, so I was exposed to its growth as a distribution. I also tried SuSe & Novell Desktop after we became a Novell partner. When I left the company & ventured on my own, I became out of touch with Linux since my succeeding business ventures weren’t IT related. Now, after nearly two years away from the industry, I feel like I’ve come home.

There have been a lot of new & exciting developments since then; Fedora Core is now at version 6 (Zod) and a relatively new entry called Ubuntu has become the most talked-about Linux distribution. Their tag-line says “Linux for human beings” so I guess they focus on making Linux very accessible to non-techies. This review gave me a nice overview of the two distributions, so I decided to try Ubuntu 6.10 or Edgy Eft. Two words: simplicity rocks!
